Who owns the material you write?

Depends on the situation, but here is a general rule of thumb.

  • First-rights always belong to the author.
  • In the case of "work-for-hire", copyright belongs to the company which comissioned the work for a period of 75 years, unless stated otherwise.
  • In the case of "pro bono" work, the copyright belongs to the author, unless stated otherwise.
